Benny Goodman In Prague 1976
Same personel as the Warsaw concert. I believe this was the final concert of that tour. The story I heard was the cost of Benny Goodman for this concert was about the equivalent of an average man's yearly salary in Prague. Early on in the tour we noticed the same two men boarding every flight we took, and I was told they were from the Czech government, there to make sure Benny and the band arrived in Prague to do the concert. In my naive mind, I pictured them as working for the state secret police. OOOOO scary!
I remember the concert hall was several floors below street level, and from the stage the hall was 3 stories high, and packed with people. My knees were knocking I assure you, but thanks to these wonderful musicians, I survived the experience, and came away a better musician.
Here might be a good time to mention a person you very seldom see in these videos, but who was a mighty force in our little world. Muriel Zuckerman was Benny's secretary, and road manager. She was tough, and all business, but as caring and deeply feeling as any one I have ever met. Muriel herded drunken musicians, handled the business, arranged dinners and sight seeing trips, and basically kept everyone functioning and comfortable and she did it in several languages. She was a force of nature. I remember visiting the memorial at the Warsaw ghetto with her. She said a prayer, and walked away with tears in her eyes. When I opened with my trio at "Crawdaddy" in the Roosevelt Hotel a year later, Muriel sent a bottle of champaign with a note from Benny. She was a great lady.
